PwnKit is a local privilege escalation in pkexec, part of polkit. pkexec is a setuid tool that lets unprivileged users run commands as privileged users according to predefined policies. It does not handle the count of its calling parameters correctly and ends up trying to execute environment variables as commands. A local attacker can craft environment variables so that pkexec executes arbitrary code.
The NVD rates it at CVSS 7.8, and CISA has listed it as actively exploited since 27 June 2022. The NVD lists polkit versions before 121.
